Just in time for tax season, when all you really want to do is run away and live in the woods for a while, it’s How to Knit in the Woods, my latest book.
This book goes to show the power of having a network of friends looking out for you. Like Crochet Style, the publisher knew what they wanted but was looking for just the right person to execute it. The editor spoke with a friend of mine, who recommended me, and there you have it!
There are all kinds of lovely patterns in How to Knit in the Woods, as well as practical strategic recommendations for working in low-light conditions and other not-optimal knitting habitats. I’m in love with the Snake in the Woods cardigan and the Tai Shan hoodie, myself. The former’s made of Teflon-coated wool that’s as high-performance as anything else out there, and the hoodie is a lovely, drape-y bamboo, perfect for warm temperatures.
Things to look forward to this year: my books The Pillow Book (Chronicle Books, March), How to Knit in the Woods (Skipstone, April) and Alt Fiber (Ten Speed Press, September) and teaching gigs all over the country. See the knitgrrl.com Events page for details on the latter.
In addition to the anezka media titles we’re working on publishing this year, I’m plugging away at a new pattern line and some other craft-related products, too. Next month, I’ll be presenting on the “green” consumer as well as crossover crafting trends at the Craft & Hobby Association show, the world’s largest industry show, in Anaheim, CA.
AlterNation, the new book from Shannon Okey and Alexandra Underhill is now available. Check out its website here.

Teaching & upcoming books

I’ve just been added to the teaching roster for Debbie Stoller’s winter knitting cruise. Stoller, the founder of BUST magazine, is perhaps best known for her bestselling Stitch ‘n Bitch book series — she’s an extremely talented knitter and crocheter and I’m overjoyed to be teaching for her. Check out the class list here. As ever, my knitting event and teaching dates can be found on the events page of Knitgrrl.com.
My publishing company anezka media has several new books coming out in the next year, including a title by Kerrie Allman, founder of the online knitting magazine Magknits, a technology-focused book for independent arts professional by Emma Jane Hogbin and many more.
indie promotions continues to create campaigns for creative companies and individuals — our recent work for painter Pat Hardy and acupuncturist Anne Kinchen is linked there.
Meanwhile, I have three books coming out in 2008 (at last count!), including one sewing title and two knitting. Keep your eyes on this page or my knitting site for news about them.

Two books Shannon edited (and wrote the instructional text for) have just been released: check out Just Gifts: 30 Patterns To Knit and Crochet and Just Socks: 30 Patterns To Knit and Crochet (Potter Craft).
Each include equal numbers of patterns for both knitters and crocheters, which is not typical in the fiber arts publishing world, by a wide variety of up and coming designers.

My new brick-and-mortar shop, Stitch Cleveland, opens this month. Stitch Cleveland is a studio/workshop space designed to complement and enhance anezka handmade, the online shop I founded in 2004, as well as several other online properties I own.
I’ve hired a software genius to help merge these sites’ backends into a coherent single-login system that will build brand awareness and also cut down on development and maintenance costs going forward.
Stitch Cleveland is a partnership between myself and two other designers — we’ll be building up that brand product-wise as well. It’s exciting! I can’t wait to start implementing our giant to-do list.
My new book, Felt Frenzy, co-authored with Heather Brack, was released spring 2007 by Interweave Press. Featuring patterns for all different kinds of felting (knit and shrink, needlefelting, wet felting, nuno felting and recycled felting), it’s received excellent reviews from knitting magazines and websites.
I have been teaching several classes based on the book around the country and at home in Cleveland. Both Heather and I are available for events and book signings. Contact us via this website or Interweave Press.
